Insulin for Life’s Humanitarian Response to Supporting Diabetes Care in Ukraine

Ukraine

Project Details

Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, countless individuals with diabetes have faced severe challenges in accessing insulin and essential diabetes management tools. The disruption of supply chains and the devastation of infrastructure have left many without the critical resources required to manage their health, putting lives at acute risk.

In response to this urgent crisis, Insulin for Life, in collaboration with the ‘Spare a Rose’ for Ukraine campaign, mobilised to secure funds and deliver vital diabetes supplies to those most affected. Through the concerted efforts of donors, sponsors, and volunteers, the initiative successfully organised the shipment of over 90 consignments, comprising more than 300 parcels packed with essential medical supplies.
  • 10,000 insulin packs delivered
  • 470 insulin delivery systems
  • 270,000 syringes and 160,000 pen needles
  • 4,400 insulin pens
  • 265,000 lancets and 33,000 alcohol swabs
  • 6,000 pump lines and reservoirs
  • 313,000 glucose monitoring tools and 304,000 glucose strips
  • 2,500 glucose meters
  • 103 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices
  • 6,300 ketone test kits
  • 1,000 ‘hypo’ treatments and glucagon pens

These shipments have provided essential lifelines to people with diabetes, enabling them to monitor and manage their condition in the most challenging circumstances.

The safe delivery of these supplies was made possible thanks to a network of dedicated volunteers, including Oleg Novikovo and his team in Austria. Braving hazardous conditions, these individuals ensured that parcels reached hospitals and diabetes clinics across conflict-affected regions, including Lviv, Kharkiv, Bucha, Irpin, Kherson, Melitopol, Mariupol, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Their tireless work has helped bridge the gap between life and death for many Ukrainians living with diabetes.

Insulin for Life Global extends heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, individual donors, and volunteers whose unwavering support made this humanitarian response possible. Your generosity and commitment have made an immeasurable difference in the lives of people facing unimaginable adversity. Together, we have shown that compassion and solidarity can overcome even the most formidable challenges.
